The English countryside has a strong influence on Charlie’s artistic sensibility. The surrounding nature, the river at the bottom of the valley, and the pine trees he looks at from his bedroom window are all part of his new EP Golden Wisdom. “I love old music, especially Folk and Country, and I want my music to tap into that same vivid feeling of nostalgia. From the Incredible String Band and Nick Drake to Roy Orbison and Everly Brothers. I love anything that reminds me of fields and pine trees. When I write music, I often picture a particular place near my home like a tree, hill, or certain view.” “My music isn’t upbeat, but it comes from a positive place. For me, it’s a way of processing difficult feelings. I was lonely as a teenager, and so I found comfort in certain songs. I remember when I went to boarding school and my brother lent me his iPod with music saved on it like M. Ward and Devendra Banhart. That was a transformative phase for me. I started to develop my own taste, using music as a medicine for when I was feeling lonely or missing home. I’d stay up late listening to all these songs, getting obsessed with the sound and fixated with the atmosphere on certain tracks. I am always trying to recreate that sense of comfort I found in those specific tracks. If my music could hit someone in the same way as Elliot Smith hit me when I first heard ‘Needle in the Hay, that’s the aim.” His debut EP Moon is Bright gained radio support from Guy Garvey, Gideon Coe, Marc Riley, Craig Charles, Don Letts, and Huey Morgan at BBC Radio 6 Music. He also saw support from Shindig Magazine, NPR, NTS Radio, KCRW and KEXP. |
